FSAs allow you to pay for eligible medical and dependent care expenses using pretax dollars you contribute on an annual basis.

There are two types of FSAs: the Health Care FSA and the Dependent Care FSA.

  • Health Care FSA: Used to pay for services not covered by your medical, dental or vision plan such as copays, coinsurance, deductibles, prescription expenses, lab exams and tests, contact lenses and eyeglasses.
  • Dependent Care FSA: Used to pay for day care expenses associated with caring for elder or child dependents that are necessary for you or your spouse to work or attend school full-time. You may not use your Health Care FSA to pay for dependent care expenses.

Comparing the Two FSAs

Health Care FSA

Contribute up to $2,750 per year, pretax.Contribute up to $2,750 per year, pretax to pay for services not covered by your medical, dental, or vision plan such as copays, coinsurance, deductibles, prescription expenses, lab exams and tests, contact lenses, and eyeglasses.
You may use your debit card or submit claims manually for reimbursement.
Eligible expenses include medical copays, coinsurance, deductibles, eyeglasses, and over-the-counter medications.
Submit claims up to March 31 of the following year for expenses from January 1 to December 31.
You may roll over up to $550 into your account for the following year when you actively enroll for the next plan year. Any funds over $550 will be forfeited per IRS regulations.

Dependent Care FSA

Contribute up to $5,000 per year, pretax, or $2,500 if married and filing separate tax returns to pay for day care expenses associated with caring for elder or child tax dependents that are necessary for you or your spouse to work or attend school full-time.

You cannot use your Healthcare FSA to pay for Dependent Care expenses.
You may use your debit card or submit claims manually for reimbursement.

Eligible expenses include day care, after school programs and elder care programs for your eligible dependents.

Submit claims up to March 31 of the following year for expenses from January 1 to December 31.

All Dependent Care FSA funds must be used by December 31, as funds do not rollover.
